CoIS Middle School (6th-8th
CoIS offers a world class education through the middle school years.
CoIS students are able to take the driver’s seat in regard to
their education during the middle school years. As an upper-elementary and middle school student at CoIS, mastery of a second language through different subjects like math, science, geography, and language arts is required. As a middle schooler, you also study a third language of your choice formally while maintaining your subject-matter competency in all subjects in your original program language and in English.
As a small, private school, CoIS offers American P.E., cultural P.E., art, music, and choir. For students interested in participating in competitive sports, our partnerships with neighboring schools make
this option possible. Our individualized teaching methods and small class sizes allow you to learn at your own pace. You can choose the topics yo u are interested in, and focus your inquiries or investigations on things you really want to learn. For example, one CoIS 7th grader wanted to learn more about web design, and also was interested in saving the environment. The result was the creation of this website, called Scene Green!
What else? You get to travel to other countries with your friends!
In fall 2011 we a re headed to China for Ancient Civilizations and Mandarin studies and fun, and in the spring, we are going to France and Greece (also for Ancient Civilizations)! You gain a world awareness. You learn in and out of the classroom (on awesome field trips). In 8th grade you do a Personal Exhibition Project, applying everything they you learned. (Previous Personal Exhibition Projects have included Food from Around the World, a Business Case Analysis of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Fencing in Popular Culture.) You prepare for high school, college and beyond. You work within the community, providing a service of your choice. You help plan special events like Halloween and the Spring Fling. You participate in the technological side of the school, helping with the school blog and yearbook. You make connections between subjects you have learned in many languages. You get to teach, and learn from, students who are older and younger than you are. You get to laugh and sing with your friends of all ages while speaking Chinese, French, Spanish, German and English. You set goals, and watch yourself achieve them. No school’s 8th grade graduates have higher student achievement in high school than ours! Our 8th grade graduates have aced college entrance exams and been accepted to some of the most prestigious universities in the country.
The only international immersion middle school in Mandarin, French, Spanish, and German, CoIS truly provides a unique middle school experience. Because of the highly-individualized learning environment at CoIS, 6st-8th grade students do not need to be previously immersed to enter CoIS.
